What The Land Remembers

Pull up a chair. November has a story to tell, and we’re beginning by looking again.

A familiar painting. A garden after harvest. A recipe passed from one pair of hands to another. This November, Wander the Wheel invites learners of all ages to explore the histories, relationships, and knowledge behind the season of gathering.

Our guiding question is simple enough to ask around the table and rich enough to follow throughout the month:

Who was here first, and what did they already know about the harvest?

Through immersive reading, art, hands-on projects, cooking, and reflection, we’ll examine the Thanksgiving pictures we inherited, read colonial accounts alongside Wampanoag perspectives, and make room for a fuller understanding of the past and the people living today.

Inside This Issue

Look again at the familiar story.
Examine historical Thanksgiving paintings and consider how artists’ choices shape what we remember. Explore what written accounts reveal, what they leave unanswered, and how additional perspectives deepen our understanding.

Meet the people behind the harvest.
Spend time with Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story, Wampanoag perspectives, seasonal knowledge, and the relationships among food, land, and community.

Wander through the gallery.
Encounter work by Jennie Augusta Brownscombe, Norman Rockwell, Kay WalkingStick, George Morrison, Elizabeth James-Perry, Maria Martinez, Marie Watt, Jeffrey Gibson, Christi Belcourt, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. Follow questions of representation, memory, materials, and belonging through paintings, textiles, ceramics, and more.

Clear the table and make something.
Build a painted cardboard harvest relief, weave a colorful paper mat, press autumn textures into clay, wrap a seasonal yarn garland, and create a glowing paper lantern. A homemade air-dry clay recipe brings the making process into your own kitchen.

Prepare a November feast.
Gather around overnight-brined Cornish hens, corn-and-bean succotash, roasted winter squash with toasted seeds, cranberry-apple crisp, and orange-and-cinnamon cider. Follow a published recipe for nasaump, with its source clearly credited.

Leave room for your own thoughts.
Explore journal invitations about place, inherited stories, gratitude, care, and gathering, with prompts for Little Wonderers, Growing Explorers, Older Teens, and Adults.

A Month to Explore Together

Created for primary learners through adults, this issue welcomes shared reading, independent exploration, lively conversation, and gloriously messy afternoons. Choose a project for the weekend, follow a question into the gallery, or bring the whole feast to your table.

The recipes create a present-day gathering, with historical context and attribution woven throughout. The making projects invite personal creativity, while the journal offers space for each reader’s response.

Rooted in respect. Guided by wonder. Crafted for learners of all ages.

Come in from the cold. There is room at the table, and more to discover together.
