Maria Sibylla Merian returns at this level, studied through the lens of scientific observation and her precise illustrations of metamorphosis. El Anatsui transforms discarded bottle caps and scrap metal into large, shimmering sculptures, showing that materials once considered waste can become something monumental. Frida Kahlo painted her own pain, illness, and identity directly onto canvas, turning personal struggle into some of the most recognized self-portraiture in modern art.
Themes Explored

Transformation at this level extends beyond nature into materials, culture, and selfhood. Merian shows change as a biological process. In Quarter 2: Transformation, students ages 8–10 explore how artists turn materials, ideas, and identities into powerful works of art. Through story-based learning, hands-on projects, and cross-curricular exploration, Wonderpath Elementary invites children to think, create, and connect.
