One semester of story-led, cross-curricular learning built around transformation, made for middle school learners examining how art reshapes identity, community, and history.
Middle School | 11-14

Anchor Artists

Augusta Savage sculpted during the Harlem Renaissance, using her work and her teaching to build opportunity for other Black artists at a time when few doors were open to her. El Anatsui returns at this level, his transformation of discarded materials studied here with more attention to technique and intention. Frida Kahlo's self-portraiture is examined for how she turned physical pain and personal history into a visual language still studied today.

Themes Explored

Middle School learners consider transformation as a social and personal force, not only an artistic one. Savage's work models transformation through community and mentorship. El Anatsui's work models transformation through resourcefulness. Kahlo's work models transformation through honesty about one's own life.

What's Inside

Two to three page living biography chapters rich with historical context, writing and research prompts including critical essays and provenance studies, art invitations balancing technical skill with personal expression, cross-disciplinary connections to history, literature, science, and social studies, and discussion questions built for group dialogue.

Who This Is For

Built for Middle School learners, ages eleven through fourteen. Designed to build resilience and empathy alongside critical thinking skills.

This semester asks middle schoolers to notice that transformation is rarely private. It happens in community, in materials, and in the stories people choose to tell about themselves.
